Remembrance: Coral is a live performance by the artist Chanee Choi during which she controls her 3d animated video game with an EEG sensor-headset.[Remembrance: Coral]&#38;nbsp; Live Streaming Performance,&#38;nbsp; January 26th 2023, Online (Link)

Remembrance is a biofeedback-driven, gamified performance art project in which the artist confronts her own fear of inheriting early-onset Alzheimer’s, the same condition her mother now faces. Using machine learning and EEG brain sensor interactions, the project generates interactive, game-like animations that respond in real-time, combining a surreal artistic vision with advanced technology.
In the Coral phase, the artist has transformed the 3D animations of Magma into a video game where the narrative is guided by her brain waves, recorded using Electroencephalography (EEG) – a headset with electrodes that measure brain activity. The signals are processed through AI to create visual abstractions.

Remembrance: Coral debuted in January 2023 as a 20-minute, live-streamed, brainwave-driven video game performance on the Blitz website as part of an online showcase of works from the Digital Artist Residency Program.&#38;nbsp;Subsequently, in November 2024, it was exhibited at the Central European University gallery in Budapest, Hungary, from November 4 to 8, with a one-hour live performance on Thursday, November 7.&#38;nbsp;Following the performance, attendees were invited to experience the brain sensor directly, allowing them to play the game themselves in an interactive, immersive event.

Remembrance: Magma is a 3D animation displayed in an immersive video installation that addresses the imaginaries of a mind as it is dying of dementia. The work was exhibited at The Jack Straw Gallery in Seattle through a solo show in April to June 2022. Remembrance: Magma incorporates machine learning, cutting-edge research on the aging brain, East Asian crafting aesthetics, and Korean shamanic traditions as it examines the nature of the brain as a sensor that desires data even as it slowly fails. Culturally intersectional, Remembrance explores world-building through the poetic and painful processes of memory degeneration.

		<description>Unreal Window part1 (2021)

Real-Time Virtual Animation using Data-Driven Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (2021)
[Unreal Window]&#38;nbsp; exhibition at ISEA 2022 Barcelona, Seattle, on June 9 - June 21 (Link)

Unreal Window part 1&#38;nbsp;is a real-time virtual animation. Inspired by the experience of confinement and virtual communication during the COVID-19 pandemic. The animation is a recording of a continuously existing AI environment created through machine learning. The video’s narration was produced by a machine learning system using the script of Hitchcock’s Rear Window and a recording of Jimmy Stewart’s voice. Unreal Window addresses the slippery sense of reality in a world of media consumption, zoom meetings, and AI animation. &#38;nbsp;

PANDEMIC is a 1st-person 3D video game in which the player is a COVID-19 virus within a virtual environment.
PANDEMIC is set in an abstract reality that consists of seven different levels or stages, each taking place in a different location. The beginning of the game represents racist coronavirus tropes and racist clichés. The intensity of this xenophobia gradually gets more harmful level by level and is followed by commentary on politics, classism, and the elite’s indifference toward lower socioeconomic groups. Finally, in the end, I make a space of beauty and hope.

Polaris is a space to discover the signal within that connects all of us through immersive light and interactive video installation. Polaris is inspired by starlight and our existence in the universe. We have a signal within us that we can use to communicate with other worlds. The Introspective signal that connects all of us might be in a dead zone temporarily, but we should believe that it is within us. Our signal connects us to the universe, and could be something we can see, feel, or touch. Like footsteps echoing in a cave, your movements through Polaris will be echoed in the light it shines as it reacts to your presence. People are invited into The Polaris Experience by an 8’ x 4’ sculpture which contains motion-activated LEDs with IR receivers. The sculpture is shaped like using four profiles of my face.
The first Polaris show, located in the Georgetown Oxbow gallery, was scheduled for April 2019.
The second Polaris show, located in Bellevue Art Museum and Bellevue City Hall, was scheduled for September 2019. A new iteration of my performance was shown on Friday, September 13 at the Bellevue Art Museum.

		<description>Mi-In-Do (미인도)

Forthcoming project 2021-2022

Mi-In-Do is a socially critical 360-degree animation and video performance of Orientalist paintings.

Mi-In-Do is about the hidden culture of the lives of women and other non-normative groups as depicted in Asian Folk Arts during the Joseon dynasty. This piece is critical of the restrictive hierarchical culture of Confucianism which continues to fuel social pressures in Asia today. I use the motifs of Yin-Yang and the five elements, exaggerated by metaphor, to highlight the trauma caused by this system.

Within the animation, the viewer will play the role of a peeping tom, a voyeurist who must hide behind stones in order to watch the puppet-like 2d animations of women extracted from the Orientalist paintings. By the end, the performer will have actually eaten these women in a fantastic cannibalistic ritual.

The consumption of these two-dimensional women will evolve so naturally out of the action, and be so aesthetically enjoyable for the player that they will find themselves tricked into taking pleasure in the overt disposability and powerlessness of these creatures, who, uncanny though they may be, are depictions of the way real women were perceived under Confucianism.

Mi-In-Do is an immersive video experience that uses absurdity and aesthetics to lure the viewer into a confrontation with the contradictions of Confucian values. By being made to feel uncomfortable, uneasy, and overwhelmed they are given the opportunity to question the assumptions underlying dominant societal structures.

Fly High is an interactive experience that combines a video game and performance art. Participants play the game by wearing a dress that is the controller. The dress controls the main character, Baby Mt. Rainier and sends it high into the universe.
I am inspired daily by the beauty and visual complexity of Mt. Rainier. The weather seems to change its color and that’s where the Baby Mt. Rainier’s colorful design originated.
